After completing this lesson teachers will be able to:
Compare and contrast the three ethical frameworks to help eliminate the shortage of transplant organs
Critique at least two current methods to allocate kidneys (donation only or an open market)
Select and support a particular method to allocate a scarce resource such as kidneys using the economic way of thinking together with the ethical frameworks discussed in this lesson
This video is available to view for EconEdLink members only.
Description
Participants will explore how the allocation of different types of resources can be harder than others and may require more ethical consideration. Participants will simulate allocating a kidney and learn more about the complexities around this market. They will consider two types of policies–donation only or open market–and the ethical considerations that come with each. Ultimately, participants will decide which allocation method is more aligned with their personal ethical principles.
